A circle of mosaic art was embedded in the sidewalk alongside Cabrillo Boulevard next to West Beach in Santa Barbara, California.

A small circular sign embedded in the sidewalk identified the art:

One of the figures along the circumference of the Syuxtun Story Circle was a canoe being paddled out to sea.

A fish was depicted as one of the sources of food.

Three circles within the Syuxtun Story Circle referenced the circles of life.

A canoe was carried back into shore loaded with fish for the village.

A village was depicted with domed thatched roofed housing and empty canoes waiting to go back out.

The sun was depicted as the bringer of all life.

Either an eagle or a snow capped mountain was shown beside two ravens.

A hawk hovered over the signs of animals having passed, as shown by their footprints.

The design in the center of the circle looked like a sand dollar.

A low wall bordered the sidewalk. This sign was embedded into that wall and read:

This twenty-foot mosaic story circle was created with over 200,000 tiles, which were placed by more than 200 members of the Chumash community and their friends.

This mosaic is at the Chumash village site of Syuxtun, the principal village of ancient Santa Barbara. The stories here have been kept alive and vibrant by the memories of our ancestors and are dedicated to those to come.
