The Compassion Bench was both a work of art and a functional public bench. Located at the corner of 3rd and C Streets, it was erected in front of the AT&T building.

One end of the bench was inlaid with ceramic art. A camera with a heart in its lens aimed outward. Below the camera was the word, "Listening."

The sign which identified the bench was mounted on a tiled concrete slab. It read:

"Compassion is . . ."

A second smaller sign was mounted below the previous sign. It read, "The Compassion Bench was created in cooperation and with much appreciation of AT&T."

The bench front had two ceramic mosaic sections. Together they read, "Compassion Is..."

The left end of the back of the bench had two ceramic panels. The leftmost one read, "imagine." The second panel read, "empathy."
