A sign led the way into the exhibit. It was just off the north end of the parking lot, just across the street from the Legion Of Honor.

A short walk along a level path led to the exhibit. The first item seen was a sign attached to a wall that described the artist's intent. It read:

"THE HOLOCAUST"
by George Segal

We will never forget the genocidal slaughter of six million Jews, including one and a half million children, in the Nazi Holocaust of 1933 -1945.

We will never forget the cruel apathy of a world which allowed that Holocaust and the deliberate murder of millions of other people to happen.

We will never forget the martyrs of that evil abyss in human history. Nor will we forget those Jews and the righteous of all faiths who resisted and fought that evil.

In the memory of those martyrs and fighters, we pledge our lives to the creation of a world in which such evil and such apathy will not be tolerated.

It is with that memory and that resolve that we dedicate this memorial.

IN REMEMBRANCE IS THE SECRET OF REDEMPTION

Dedicated

To the right of the description were three more signs that told the story of the Holocaust in greater historical detail.

From the level of the descriptions, one looked over the wall and seemed to peer down into a Nazi extermination camp from behind.

The view of the exhibit from the front. There was a low wide wall along the front for people to sit and contemplate the exhibit. The photograph was taken from a high angle by standing on that wall.

The standing man represented the lone survivor waiting at the barbed wire fence for anyone to arrive to save him.

The dead bodies piled on the ground were in the open. Anyone can wander among them to either admire the art or to decry the offense.

Two dead men appeared to hold hands. This was either accidental or the artist wished to suggest that gays were also killed in the death camps.

Men and women were piled together. But note how the undersides of some were cut away to make the pile all that more gruesome.
