Two sculptures faced each other across S.W. 1st Street. They formed a border or gateway to the street beyond. It was called "Steamboat Gateway" because in the 1800's S.W. 1st Street led to river steamboats that hauled freight and food.

Three metal birds in flight were atop each column. The birds were mounted in such a way that they could rotate when the wind blew.

The color of the metal used to create the birds blended well with the fall leaves on trees behind them.

The base of one of the columns at ground level was drab and uninteresting. The columns, which could have been artistic in their own right, were instead created only to hold up the birds.

A tiny bit of graffiti had appeared on one of the columns. The word "Matty," was written near the top of the white band and above a sticker that had been recently removed.
