Westley stood up by his parents' reclining chair and looked wide awake and ready to party.

Simple decorations adorned the ceiling. The streamers wrapped down the corners of the room with additional balloons at each corner.

His birthday presents were piled on the kitchen table, along with one card and a small pile of noise makers.

Denver and Brandon, Westley's parents, chatted with Westley's grandfather in the kitchen while Denver prepared snacks for the guests.

Westley's dad laid on the floor and performed a simple dog trick.

Westley held the receiver of his first phone in his hand. He had taken it from a gift that featured several removable parts.

While Debi, a guest, entertained Westley by pulling a centipede that was a gift from Angela, his mother read his first birthday card aloud.

Westley played with a wooden centipede brought all the way from Germany by Angela.

Westley scored big this birthday. Here were three examples. A play laptop; A DVD of the Lion King; and a driving book complete with horn and steering wheel.

Terry's birthday book (a book documenting Westley's first year) was a hit at the party. Here guest Angela, Westley's mom Denver, and Westley's grandfather Bob admired the book.

Westley's first birthday cake was made with yogurt frosting over a healthful cake. Here, his father's arm held the cake while everyone sang Happy Birthday to Westley.

Westley clearly found the frosting on his cake tasty. It was yogurt so it was actually nourishing for him.

There was nothing at all healthful about the birthday cake for the adults. Thick frosting balloons and candy sprinkles made this cake a sugar bomb.

Westley paused during the eating of his personal birthday cake and looked up at the camera.
