Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, `What shall we eat?' or `What shall we drink?'

No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

Vous ne pouvez servir Dieu et Mamon. C'est pourquoi je vous dis: Ne vous inquiétez pas pour votre vie de ce que vous mangerez, ni pour votre corps, de quoi vous serez vêus. La vie n'est-elle pas plus que la nourriture, et le corps plus que le vêtement? Regardez les oiseaux du ciel: ils ne sèment ni ne moissonnent, et ils n'amassent rien dans des greniers; et votre Père céleste les nourrit. Ne valez-vous pas beaucoup plus qu'eux? Qui de vous, par ses inquiétudes, peut ajouter une coudée à a durée de sa vie? Et pourquoi vous inquiéter au sujet du vêtement? Considérez comment croissent les lis des champs: ils ne travaillent ni ne filent; cependant je vous dis que Salomon même, dans toute sa gloire, n'a pas été vêtu comme l'un d'eux. Si Dieu revêt ainsi l'herbe des champs, qui existe aujourd'hui et qui demain sera jetée au four, ne vous vêtira-t-il pas à plus forte raison, gens de peu de foi? Ne vous inquiétez donc point, et ne dites pas: Que mangerons-nous? que boirons-nous? de quoi serons-nous vêtus? Car toutes ces choses, ce sont les païens qui les recherchent. Votre Père céleste sait que vous en avez besoin. Cherchez premièrement le royaume et la justice de Dieu; et toutes ces choses vous seront données par-dessus. Ne vous inquiétez donc pas du lendemain; car le lendemain aura soin de lui-même. A chaque jour suffit sa peine.

«Ninguém pode servir a dois senhores, porque ou há-de odiar um e amar o outro, ou se dedicará a um e desprezará o outro. Vós não podeis servir a Deus e ao dinheiro. Por isso vos digo: «Não vos preocupeis, quanto à vossa vida, com o que haveis de comer, nem, quanto ao vosso corpo, com o que haveis de vestir. Não é a vida mais do que o alimento e o corpo mais do que o vestuário? Olhai para as aves do céu: não semeiam nem ceifam nem recolhem em celeiros; o vosso Pai celeste as sustenta. Não valeis vós muito mais do que elas? Quem de entre vós, por mais que se preocupe, pode acrescentar um só côvado à sua estatura? E porque vos inquietais com o vestuário? Olhai como crescem os lírios do campo: não trabalham nem fiam; mas Eu vos digo: nem Salomão, em toda a sua glória, se vestiu como um deles. Se Deus assim veste a erva do campo, que hoje existe e amanhã é lançada ao forno, não fará muito mais por vós, homens de pouca fé? Não vos inquieteis, dizendo: `Que havemos de comer? Que havemos de beber? Que havemos de vestir?' Os pagãos é que se preocupam com todas estas coisas. Bem sabe o vosso Pai celeste que precisais de tudo isso. Procurai primeiro o reino de Deus e a sua justiça, e tudo o mais vos será dado por acréscimo. Portanto, não vos inquieteis com o dia de amanhã, porque o dia de amanhã tratará das suas inquietações. A cada dia basta o seu cuidado»
