A sign was etched in stone and bordered the trail leading to the northwest corner of the Presidio Grounds. It read, "They say: We were young. We have died. Remember us."

Another sign was etched in stone and bordered the trail. It read, "They say, our deaths are not ours; They are yours; They will mean what you make them."

The third sign too was etched in stone and bordered the trail. It read, "They say: Whether our lives and our deaths were for peace and a new hope or for nothing we cannot say; It is you who must say this."

The final sign that bordered the path, read: "They say: We leave you our deaths. Give them their meaning. We were young, they say. We have died. Remember us." And was credited: Excerpt from "The Young Dead Soldiers." by Archibald Macleish.

The National Cemetery glimpsed through trees and viewed from the trail along the edge of the Presidio.

Several of the cemetery graves were marked with pillars instead of headstones. One of those pillars had a statue of a soldier stood proudly upon it.

The front gate was closed and blocked entry to the road that ran straight up into the cemetery.
