Most cities and towns require the pedestrian to press a button to let the traffic signal know to operate the crosswalk signal. That is not the case in San Francisco. Crosswalk signals always illuminate automatically. The button, as it says "Accessible Message Only," only provides an audio announcement, when it is safe to cross.
