 The Downtown Berkeley BART station is located underground as part of a three-stop below-ground section of the BART system. This is how the platform looked in 2010.

 In February of 2019 the Downtown Berkeley BART station was undergoing image improvements. A new canopy was just installed over the main entry to the underground station.

 The sign over the new entrance made it clear that this was the entrance to Downtown Berkeley station and to BART. A gate could be lowered from inside the sign support to close the station in the middle of the night.

 Just inside the new canopy were two escalators and one staircase giving access to the station for able bodied people. An elevator was also available but not shown here.

 Three information signs were displayed alongside the station's entrance. One showed all the AC Transit stops that were near the BART station. Another showed a map of downtown Berkeley. And a third advertised local businesses.

 The plaza surrounding the Downtown Berkeley Station had also been improved. In addition to the new canopy, more bicycle parking has been added, and a coffee shack installed.
