A pedestrian bridge crossed the tracks. It provided a great view of the station as well as Portland generally. There were both stairs and a clean elevator at each end.

Passengers could be seen here boarding one of two trains currently stopped at the station. Note the copious use of roofs over the passenger platforms to protect from rain, snow and sun.

Connection to local transit was handy. Light Rail trains and buses stopped no more than a block away from the station. The green and yellow MAX Light Rail lines serviced this Amtrak station.

The front of the station with its taxi parking and limited car parking. The initial design for the station was created in 1882 by McKim, Mead, and White. Had the original plan been built, the station would have been the largest train station in the world. A smaller plan was introduced by architects Van Brunt & Howe, and accepted in 1885. Construction of the station began in 1890.

The ironwork trim outside and the use of curves were all reminiscent of construction used by the French in the 1800s.

The main passenger entrance to the station was also the exit. Here, many happy passengers were exiting the station following their trip by train.

A side door just outside the baggage claim area provided access to Amtrak bus service. The trains only ran twice per day, so buses had to be used to supplement that schedule.

An area for passenger pickup was just across the street from the train station and under an on-ramp. There wasn't room for very many cars.

One of the outside lamps used by the station was attached to a ceiling composed of many curved boards. The curve of the boards exactly matched the outside curve of the roof.
