At the ferry terminal, local folks waited on shore for the ferry to depart.

Among the details that would make one doubt the sea worthiness of this ferry, were the greased through-hull fittings held in place with a bent nail.

The other ferry was the "car" ferry. A much bigger craft made of steel and with more decks. That ferry was scheduled for a later run.

The ship's docking lines were piled on the front deck in a haphazard fashion. This risked tangling the lines when next used.

The shore of Lake Nicaragua as the ferry got under way.

The anchor, a small Kledge style anchor, was hooked over the gunwale with its rode piled around it.

One of the curtains forward toward the bow was rolled down to protect passengers from bow spray caused by rough waters.

Tourists and locals both paid the same and shared the same seats for the crossing. Most seats were wide enough for two people. A few bench seats sat up to five across.

The rough ride on a windy lake ended when we arrived at the dock on the island. Workers climbed up onto the top deck to unload luggage.

Once again on solid land, here we looked back at the ferry after it had been fully unloaded.

From the ferry dock it was a short walk inland to transportation. Andrew could be seen center left and loaded with luggage, looking right at a conversation between passenger and a guard. Towering in the background was a volcano.
