It was foggy upon arrival, which we later learned caused the volcano to have three different kinds of flora. At this level was cloud forest.

Inside were tables and exhibits there to explain the geology, flora and fauna of the volcano. In the lower right was a scale model of the volcano.

Map Of The Walks

On a wall over the model volcano was a map of the two walks. The short walk was around the left cone. The long walk was half way around the left cone, across to the second cone, around it, and back across to finish the left cone. The short walk was 1.5 hours, the long walk was 5 hours. From the map you might think the walk was level, but it actually ranged vertically by hundreds of meters.

A sign on one wall of the biological station credited Northern Ireland with helping to construct it. The sign read:

Fundacion Cocibolca extends its appreciation to
The Government of the United kingdom of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland,
represented by its Ambassador, Mr. Roy Osborne, for their
support and generous contribution in the construction and
equipping of the Volcán Mombacho Biological Station.

The Biological Station had been fumigated while we took the short walk around Mombacho Volcano's first cone. Upon return we found the ground littered with dead wasps.
