The Balboa Park Club external link building was first constructed for the 1915 exposition. It was in the Spanish classic style and its front was decorated with small cactus. One of the main features of this building was its approximately 13,000 square feet of unobstructed wood dance floor.

The Garden Behind

The Old Cactus Garden was located behind the Balboa Park Club building. A small road with parking went behind the building and the garden was just beyond that road.

The "Old" in "Old Cactus Garden" refers to the cactus. Planted in 1935, these cactus have been growing for over three-quarters of a century. These were specimens that bordered the roadway.

Mature Garden

Paths in this garden led by many tall and large cacti. All the specimens appeared mature and well maintained.

Dramatic Trees

The garden had many large dramatic cactus trees. The best time to see the garden is in the early morning or near sunset. The garden is always open.

Behind the Balboa Park Club was a little-used picnic area. With the cactus garden on one side and the Balboa Park Club building on the other side, this picnic area was a scenic and restful place to stop.
