The line on the ground that has glass bricks in its center under which was lighting lit at night. This line defined the limit of land. To the left was the new park built on pilings driven into the bay floor to a depth that met bedrock.

Picnic tables were a part of the new park. In the background a worker was putting the finishing touches on a concrete riser.

Last minute work interrupted the walkway and inconvenienced pedestrians.

Tide indicators dominated this end of the park. Striped, floating tubes floated inside red steel cylinders. The black with thin yellow stripes indicated a positive tide. The yellow with thin black stripes indicated a minus tide.

A sign near the tide indicators described how they worked.

The view from the park makes the pulse of the nautical felt. Here one of the boats competing in the America's Cup sailed past.

A huge grass area dominated the center of the park. Not unusual for a park, until you realize it is built on a pier over the bay.

The benches available for seating also protected against the homeless by placing an arm bar in the center, and protected against skateboarders by locating them near a low concrete wall.

Staggered walls lined the grassy area. They were staggered to discourage skateboard use.

A shaded viewing area with benches underneath. The shade seemed of little use on opening day because of the overcast skies.

History lined the walls at the south end of the park. Permanent displays that describe some of San Francisco's history.
