./Solar_Eclipse_Salem_Oregon_Riverfront_Park_20170821_102039_C17_5085.jpg

Night fell under the circular shadow of totality. But beyond that shadow the rest of the world remained in light. So, despite night time overhead, the horizon remained lit.

Before totality, the sun could only be viewed with eclipse glasses. During totality, the corona could be viewed with the naked eye. The black spot in the center is the moon.

./Solar_Eclipse_Salem_Oregon_Riverfront_Park_20170821_102301_C17_5090.jpg

The first hint of a sun, the barest glimpse along the edge of the moon and one could no longer view it without eclipse glasses. Even a sliver of the sun was daylight bright and harmful to the unprotected eye.
