Sunlight reflecting off the top of the water added a brighter layer to the display of ripples. It also caused highlights and shadows to appear under the water.

Placid water fools the eye into not-seeing the water layer over the rocks, but there was just enough distortion to make the mind believe.

Active Water Is Impressionistic

If water were an artist, the rapidly moving and more rippled water could mark its impressionistic period. The rocks become suggestions of rocks, no longer actual rocks.

The water, here, is passing over the rocks from left to right. The effect is to cause the rocks below the surface to appear as if they are moving rapidly from right to left.

Small Rocks Settled Around Boulders

The tendency for small rocks to settle around the base of larger boulders, causes the smaller rocks to take on recognizable shapes. Here, the rocks resemble a galloping giraffe, or a scorpion attacking a duck. What shapes to you see?
