The park was originally built as part of the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition. The site fell into disrepair and was used as an Army motor pool from 1941 to 1947. State of California appropriated $2 million in 1965 for restoration, and financier Walter Johnson contributed an additional $2 million in 1967. In 2005 the ugly cyclone fence was finally torn down.
